In October 1962, Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council. One of the key documents it issued upon its conclusion, in December 1965, contained a new vision for relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish religion. It asserted that Jews were not to be blamed for the murder of Jesus, nor were they to be considered an accursed people. Accordingly, antisemitic persecution was also deplored.
