How HBCUs Inspire Black Scholars

Tyrone Freeman applied to two colleges — Lincoln University, located outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia — each Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Accepted to both institutions, he chose Lincoln and graduated in 1995. As Freeman recalls, “My 17-year old self would have told you that A Different World, the hit 1980s TV series about a fictional HBCU, was the reason [I attended a Black college].” However, as he looks back today, for three generations, all but four of the nearly 20 members of his family who went to college attended HBCUs. According to Freeman, “HBCUs were always around me, in my blood.”
