History Day 2023 – Histories of troubled and troubling relationships
History Day 2023 – Histories of troubled and troubling relationships
Moderator: Rita Copeland | Participants: Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers and Karma Ben Johanan
This conversation brought together two scholars who work on different contexts and use different methodologies: a social and economic history of North American slavery on the one hand, and an intellectual history of religion in the aftermath of the Holocaust on the other. Both scholars explore fraught and complex historical relationships – between Christians and Jews and between enslaver and enslaved. These relationships were at once close and yet filled with tension and conflict. What new understanding emerges about both groups when looking at the points of contact and conflict between them?
